7 Ways to Increase Search Engine Visibility

Comments Off on 7 Ways to Increase Search Engine Visibility

With just a few basic tips on search engine optimization you will set your website up for success with the search engines and direct new visitors to your site in no time. And fortunately it doesn’t need to cost a ton of money or require any advanced technical skills to figure out. These tips won’t necessarily get you a top 10 page ranking over night, but will absolutely help generate more traffic and page visits over the long run.

1. Content is King!
If you’re consistently updating your site with interesting and engaging content then you’re already doing the most important part! Search engines love new and relevant content and therefore will pick up on your new posts right away, especially if you develop a bit of a following to your site. An easy way to keep your content fresh is through a blog on your website. Share regular and insightful content with your audience that offers them genuine value and you’ll always have people coming back for more.

2. Keywords are Queen!
We always need to be thinking about keywords within the content of our websites. More specifically we want to think about what people will be searching for to find this content. The main elements that need extra special attention are the URLs, titles, headers, links, image “ALT” tags and page content. Think about what main keywords would be relevant for the individual pages and what a user would be looking for. Feel free to use variations of your keywords throughout the page to make it readable and appropriate to your audience. You definitely don’t want to over do it and end up with a page or website with keyword spam everywhere, but you want to ensure it makes sense and reads well. You can use tools like Google’s Keyword Tool to get ideas of what keyword strings might be most effective for your pages.

3. Track your progress
One of the first things to setup for any website is your Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools. These free tools allow you to track all your visitors, their demographics, how they found your website and much more. This will let you track how your website traffic grows and monitor the effects of changes you make or campaigns you run. Two must have tools worth signing up for!

4. Internal Links
Often over-looked, but linking to your own pages is very important for both search engines and user engagement. With well-placed internal and “related” links on your pages and posts, plus interesting and high quality content (from Tip #1) people will naturally explore your site and stay longer. These links also offer an easy path for the search engines to find your important pages and prioritize them appropriately. Make sure to include descriptive anchor text in your links to assist in the search ranking.

5. Backlinks
The more relevant links on the Internet that point to your website, the more important and respected the search engines see your website to be. Do some research to find other industry websites or directories that you could potentially list your company details and website on. You’d be surprised how many more visits you will get to your site from even just a couple backlinks from other related websites. And as an added bonus you build some new relationships with similar companies and people. In your Google Webmaster Tools account you can view your referrers linking to your website and with Google Analytics you can see how much traffic they’re sending you!

6. Old and New School Sitemaps
Just like we did 15 years ago, it’s important to have a sitemap for your website that makes it easy for your users to find the information they are looking for. This is also an excellent way for search engines to crawl your website and prioritize them in rankings. Don’t forget to also create an XML version of your sitemap to submit in your Google Webmaster Tools. This fast tracks the search indexing for your website and ensures that Google has the appropriately updated sitemap when changes are made to your site. If you’re running a self-hosted WordPress.org website then WordPress SEO by Yoast is a great plugin, and otherwise websites like www.xml-sitemaps.com offer great free sitemap generators to create XML sitemaps to submit to Google, Bing or Yahoo.

7. Social Media baby!
Integrate your great content into your social networks and let the power of social media take over! You want to share your content everywhere that is relevant to your business. This addition of social sharing has huge impact and can exponentially increase the number of visitors on your websites. Along with sharing your content, participate in social conversations with others to help build up your brand and following. The more your content is out there, the more the search engines will pick it up and bring people your direction!
